Etna’s fireworks

September 07, 2007 By: Ilias Category: Links, flickr, photos, video, voyager, world

Europe’s highest and most active volcano, Etna is putting on a spectacular display shooting lava up into the sky from its molten centre.

Etna Volcano

Etna erupts regularly, but rarely causes any damage to the surrounding villages. Although the local airport of Catania, based at the base of the volcano, would close during the night as a precaution.

Istanbul Photos

Istanbul (21) Istanbul (20) Istanbul (19) Istanbul (18) Istanbul (17)

Istanbul (Turkish: İstanbul, Greek: Κωνσταντινούπολη, historically Byzantium and later Constantinople; see other names) is Turkey’s most populous city, and its cultural and financial center. The city covers 25 districts of the Istanbul province. It is located at 41° N 29° E, on the Bosphorus strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul (Constantinople) served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330-395), the Byzantine Empire (395-1204 and 1261-1453), the Latin Empire (1204-1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The “Historic Areas of Istanbul” were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.

(more…)

September 05, 2007 By: Ilias Category: Design, Links, photos

Image1_2Imagine a photograph so big, its creators have trouble thinking of places large enough to display it. Imagine three stories high by eleven stories wide. Imagine a 1200 pound picture.
A group of six photographers known as “The Legacy Project,” along with 400+ volunteers, artists and experts, have created the world’s largest photograph, titled The Great Picture. The image, which was developed July 8, 2006, will have its premier exhibition September 6 through 29, 2007 at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Read more..

Βαρβάσαινα, Πύργος Ηλείας (Αύγουστος 2007)

August 28, 2007 By: Ilias Category: Greece, Greek, Travel, news, photos, voyager

Yahoo! Photos is closing on September 20

August 23, 2007 By: Ilias Category: flickr, internet, news, photos, voyager

According to the email that Yahoo! sent a few minutes ago, Yahoo! Photos is closing on Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 p.m. Until then users will have the opportunity to move their photos to another photo sharing service.
Read below to learn more..

Dear Yahoo! Photos user,
For some time now, we’ve supported two great photo sharing services: Yahoo! Photos and Flickr. But even good things come to an end, and we’ve decided to close Yahoo! Photos to focus all our efforts on Flickr — the award-winning photo sharing community that TIME Magazine has called “completely addictive.”

We will officially close Yahoo! Photos on Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 p.m. PDT. Until then, we are offering you the opportunity to move to another photo sharing service (Flickr, KODAK Gallery, Shutterfly, Snapfish, or Photobucket). We’re making the transfer real simple, and with a couple clicks we’ll automatically move your photos to Flickr or wherever you want them. You can also download your original-resolution photos back to your computer, or buy an archive CD from our featured partner (for users of the New Yahoo! Photos only). All you need to do is tell us what to do with your photos before we close, after which any photos remaining on Yahoo! Photos will be deleted and no longer accessible.

Of course, we hope you’ll join us at Flickr (you can even use your Yahoo! ID), but we also realize that Flickr may not be for everyone. In the end, we want you to find the service that’s right for you, and we hope you take some time to learn more about your options before making this important decision.

Please give us your decision by Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 p.m. PDT. After that time, any photos remaining in Yahoo! Photos will be deleted. Click here to make your decision, or review a list of our frequently asked questions.

Thanks for being a part of the Web’s largest photo sharing service — we hope to see you over at Flickr!

If you have already moved or downloaded your photos, please disregard this message.
The Yahoo! Photos team
