Etna’s fireworks

September 07, 2007 By: Ilias Category: Links, flickr, photos, video, voyager, world

Europe’s highest and most active volcano, Etna is putting on a spectacular display shooting lava up into the sky from its molten centre.

Etna Volcano

Etna erupts regularly, but rarely causes any damage to the surrounding villages. Although the local airport of Catania, based at the base of the volcano, would close during the night as a precaution.

August 28, 2007 By: Ilias Category: Greece, Greek, Travel, news, photos, voyager

Global Warming: How the World is Changing

July 22, 2007 By: Ilias Category: photos, world

While the effect of human activity on the global climate is hotly debated, physical signs of environmental change are all around us.

Global Warming

Some scientists say an increase in the rate of melting of the world’s glaciers is evidence of global warming.

Argentina’s Upsala Glacier was once the biggest in South America, but it is now disappearing at a rate of 200 metres per year. Other scientists say its reduction is due to complicated shifts in glacial dynamics and local geology.

April 12, 2007 By: Ilias Category: Links, People, Wallpapers, photos, world

Jouney to Antarctica

Antarctica is Earth’s southernmost continent, overlying the South Pole. Situated in the southern hemisphere and largely south of the Antarctic Circle, Antarctica is surrounded by the southerly waters of the world ocean[1] or Southern Ocean.[2] At 14.4 million km², Antarctica is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America; in turn, Europe and Australia are smaller. Some 98% of it is covered by ice which averages at least 1.6 km in thickness.
